That is a real gap worth naming, not glossing over: most free TTS coverage claims for Hungarian bundle in a system voice and call it done. Here the neural tier is a single engine, and it only runs where WebGPU does.

The honest limits

Supertonic HD is WebGPU-only with no WebAssembly fallback tier, and there is no Piper voice sitting underneath it the way there is for Spanish or Polish. On a desktop with a working GPU you get studio-grade 44.1kHz Hungarian after a one-time ~380MB cached download. On a phone, or a desktop without WebGPU, you get your operating system's Hungarian voice and nothing in between — there is no middle neural tier to fall back to.

That makes the Web Speech tier do more work for Hungarian than it does for languages with a Piper voice available. Whether that system voice is any good depends entirely on the OS and browser combination the reader has installed, which is why this page tries to be specific about actual voice names rather than a generic "your device has a voice" claim.

Hungarian is heavily agglutinative: a single word can carry what other languages spread across a preposition and a noun phrase, producing very long words built from chained suffixes. That stresses any TTS engine's chunking logic at sentence and clause boundaries, since a chunk boundary landing mid-word (or right after an unusually long one) can produce an odd pause or stress pattern that has nothing to do with mispronunciation. Vowel length also matters semantically in Hungarian (short a/e/i/o/u/ö/ü versus long á/é/í/ó/ú/ő/ű change word meaning), so a flattened long vowel is a real accuracy miss, not just a stylistic quirk, worth listening for when proofreading Hungarian by ear.

The Web Speech API engine works on every modern phone with no download, and it is the default so the first play click always works. The neural engines are more demanding: Supertonic HD needs WebGPU and is effectively a desktop feature.

Can I download the Hungarian audio?

Yes, as WAV or MP3, generated on your device. Anything longer than about 20,000 characters is packaged as a ZIP of audio parts so memory stays bounded on long documents.

Try it in Hungarian — open the Magyar app, not the English one

This is the one piece of setup worth knowing, because it is not obvious: the neural voice list follows the language of the page you are on. On the English homepage the Supertonic reads with the English language tag — so Hungarian text pasted there will be pronounced as though it were English. Open the Magyar version instead and the engine picks up Hungarian automatically.
