Which engines actually speak Russian

Russian is served by two of the three neural engines, which puts it ahead of Korean, Japanese and Chinese:

Having both matters more than having either. The WebGPU requirement is the single biggest reason a neural voice fails to appear for someone, and Russian is one of the languages where losing WebGPU costs you quality rather than costing you neural speech altogether.

The honest limits

One limitation to know: irina-medium is medium-only. The upstream catalog has no smaller Russian model, so there is no step-down if a device cannot allocate it — Russian falls back to the Web Speech API rather than to a lighter neural voice. Devices reporting 4GB of RAM or less are started on the smallest available tier deliberately, and for Russian the smallest available tier is the only tier.

Russian also stresses the length limits more than most, because the text people bring to it tends to be long-form — articles, chapters, coursework. Input is chunked and streamed rather than sent anywhere, so a 100,000-word paste behaves the same as a sentence, and an audio export longer than about 20,000 characters is packaged as a ZIP of parts rather than one enormous file.

Nothing you paste is uploaded

This is the part that separates in-browser TTS from the cloud tools that look identical in a browser tab. A cloud tool sends your Russian text to a server, synthesizes it there, and sends audio back — the page is a remote control. Reading Russian documents, not just pasted text

A scanned PDF — a photo of text with no text layer — is handled by running OCR locally in WebAssembly rather than uploading the scan, which is precisely the case where local processing is worth the most.

Speed, volume and voice can all be changed mid-read and the current passage replays under the new settings without starting over. Switching the engine itself stops playback, so you press play once to start the new one — there is no mid-read handover of the remaining text between engines.

Try it in Russian — open the Русский app, not the English one

This is the one piece of setup worth knowing, because it is not obvious: the neural voice list follows the language of the page you are on. On the English homepage the Piper voices are the English ones, and Supertonic reads with the English language tag — so Russian text pasted there will be pronounced as though it were English. Open the Русский version instead and the engine picks up Russian voices, including ru_RU-irina-medium, automatically.
